![]() Except for a short 1988 story arc in which an amnesiac Sonny assumed his "undercover" identity as drug dealer Sonny Burnett, things moved at a steady and reliable clip throughout the series' four-season run. Making occasional appearances were Belinda Montgomery as Sonny's ex-wife, Caroline, and Sheena Easton as wife number two (albeit briefly), Caitlin Davies. Martin Castillo, Olivia Brown and Saundra Santiago as feisty female cops Trudy Joplin and Gina Navarro, and John Diehl as Larry Zito, Crockett and Tubbs' obligatory "orthodox" co-worker Calabrese. Though Sonny and Ricardo were pretty much the whole show, a few supporting characters were also worth noting, especially Edward James Olmos as the boys' mercurial superior officer Lt. And the criminal element - which on this series consisting primarily of drug lords, white slavers, and illicit arms traders - was well advised to stay out of their way. Like most such salt-and-pepper TV detective teams, Crockett and Tubbs did not always see eye to eye on details and procedure, but when they worked together as undercover cops in the sleazy underbelly of the Florida resort community, they almost invariably got results. Tubbs hailed from New York, and had come to Florida to track down the drug dealer responsible for his brother's murder. Crockett was a Ferrari-driving fashion trendsetter (how many millions of the series' young male fans emulated Sonny's no-socks, no-shave "look"?), who lived on a sailboat called St. Set in (where else?) Miami, the series starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as hard-nosed Miami-Dade PD vice detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. The pilot has Jimmy Smits and Mykelti Williamson in small roles.Miami Vice has been described as "the first cop show for the MTV generation." Brilliantly capturing the mood, the style, the rhythm, the pulsations, the bright electric colors, and the garish glitz of the early '80s, the weekly, 60-minute series was just a much an elongated music video (with a Jan Hammer score) as it was a crime drama - and it set the standard for the scores of copycat series that followed in its wake. Michael Mann the Executive Producer of the show was instrumental in the way this looked. He lives in a boat with an alligator named Elvis. Crockett is a good cop with a messy family life. Not before finding out that they have not been entirely truthful to each other. He has just lost his partner and finds that there might be corruption in his department. He comes across Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) who is undercover. Tubbs has come to Miami to find Calderone. New York cop Ricardo Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas) is after a Columbian drug kingpin called Calderone who killed his brother, also a cop. In the opener it was rather tame compared to later episodes. This was enhanced with the way lighting was used for the night shoots. From the pastel coloured costumes, Don Johnson's designer stubble and the use of real life Miami locations. Miami Vice was not just about songs and music. The songs varied a lot, you had cheesy Cyndi Lauper and later a magnificent moody use of Phil Collins 'In the Air Tonight' intercut with Crockett and Tubbs driving in the Miami night. All of sudden, rock music was blaring out from the speakers of your television set whether you were watching Hunter, The Fall Guy or Street Hawk. Just about every episodic television show in America had to copy it. Once it emerged in the television landscape. In between these two shows came Miami Vice. This was a community filled with working class people and power players. A world away from glamour soaps of Dynasty and Dallas. Twin Peaks bought a new kind of storytelling. There was no reset at the end of the episode. ![]() The lives of the characters developed throughout the series.
